NYFEA’s Education for American Agriculture – Education and Leadership Programs

The NYFEA educational strategic plan is entitled Education for American Agriculture. It is designed to take NYFEA into the future as agriculture’s motivator of the next generation of young and beginning producers and young agribusiness professionals. NYFEA will offer the finest leadership development, agribusiness management training, community service and recognition programs to facilitate this outcome. The purpose of Education for American Agriculture is to provide the tools needed for NYFEA to address the question: “Where will we find the next generation of young and beginning producers and young agribusiness professionals?”

NYFEA participants have the opportunity to participate in Education for American Agriculture’s four pronged approach to success. NYFEA believes that leadership is a skill that every person can learn. However, to become a leader for agriculture, a person must follow a simple formula:

1. Attain knowledge - Through courses on leadership, management and agriculture, participants are able to gain knowledge.
2. Practice implementing the information - Using the NYFEA menu of contests, a person can practice effective leadership and refine business practices.
3. Apply what has been learned - Through the community service programs, NYFEA participants apply information dealing with ag literacy, world hunger, scholarships for young people, farm safety, and school involvement.
4. Encourage and Recognize Success (Salute the Best) - The purpose of the salutes is to encourage the future generations.

Educational Programs

1. Series of web-based postings that make great individual or group-based learning resources.
2. Agricultural/Professional Development – Twice annually the association offers educational programs at its national meetings. Educational programs include leadership training, motivation, and skills enhancement.
3. National Agricultural Online Degree Program offering accredited educational courses

Salutes, Awards & Recognitions

The contest guidelines are designed to provide NYFEA participants with the tools they need to become great leaders. This NYFEA handbook contains the guidelines for entering the contests. It also outlines the requirements for competing and the level of performance expected. This is a tool that should make it easier for local organizations to host contests. Programs provide the opportunity for individuals to practice their communications, farm business, writing and other skills.

NYFEA - Service Projects

The service project guidelines are designed to provide NYFEA participants with the tools they need to apply their skills. They provide a sample of how to get involved with the community. Guidelines for entering the service projects. It also outlines the requirements for successful service projects. This is a tool that should make it easier for local organizations to host projects. Sample project ideas include farm safety day camps, field days, “Wheelbarrow Race for Hunger”, “Pizza Party”, etc.

NYFEA – Salutes and Meetings

The NYFEA Annual Convention (Institute) and the National Ag Leadership Conference (summer) are held in fun and desirable locations like Walt Disney World, Niagara Falls, etc. They are the feature location for the annual Salute to Outstanding Young & Beginning Producers and Young Agribusiness Professional. These are national and international recognitions designed to identify and encourage through real-world examples. The two annual meetings also provide leadership training, policy setting conferences, ag tours, training in career opportunities for the 18-25 year old (Young Ag Leaders Event), etc.
